Renowned veteran journalist Jim Avila, celebrated for his extensive career as a senior correspondent, has passed away at 70 following a prolonged illness. His departure signifies the loss of a prominent figure in American journalism, respected for his insightful storytelling and relentless pursuit of truth.
Avila was widely recognized for his role as a Senior National Correspondent, and he notably held the position of White House reporter. Prior to this, he covered many critical national events and political stories throughout his decades-spanning career.
His younger brother, investigative journalist Jaie Avila, confirmed the sad news and delivered a heartfelt statement.
“Jim was an exemplary reporter who motivated me to enter the news field, influencing many aspects of my life,” Jaie reflected. “He garnered numerous awards but took particular pride in his induction into the National Association of Hispanic Journalists Hall of Fame in 2019.”
Their connection went beyond the professional sphere. In 2018, when Jim faced kidney failure, Jaie courageously donated one of his own kidneys.
“Jim cherished his three children—Jamie, Jenny, and Evan. This transplant allowed him to witness one child’s marriage and welcomed two grandchildren. It was a great blessing,” Jaie shared.
Jim frequently expressed how the transplant altered his life.
“Without Jaie and my kids, I wouldn’t have survived. I couldn’t have endured six to eight years of dialysis,” he remarked after the procedure. “We raced to complete this before dialysis commenced—and we triumphed.”
As a White House correspondent, Jim Avila was a significant voice during the Obama administration. His investigative efforts and political reporting were essential in shaping national discussions on key policy changes, including the landmark resumption of relations between the U.S. and Cuba—a story that earned him the notable Merriman Smith Memorial Award.
Beyond political coverage, Avila was widely respected for his fearless reporting, keen analytical abilities, and capacity to clarify nuanced national matters. Throughout his impressive career, he achieved:
Two National Emmy Awards
Five Edward R. Murrow Awards
Numerous accolades for excellence in public service and investigative journalism
In 2021, Avila took a step back from national news, only to return in 2023 to join KGTV-TV in San Diego as a senior investigative reporter—evidence of his unwavering commitment to the field of journalism.
Colleagues from the industry remember Jim Avila not just for his remarkable career but for his steadfast commitment to truth and mentorship.
In a tribute to his life, ABC News President Almin Karamehmedovic stated, “We extend our deepest sympathies to his family, including his children, and express our gratitude for his substantial contributions and relentless pursuit of the truth.”
Jim Avila leaves behind a legacy characterized by excellence, valor, and a profound enthusiasm for journalism—a legacy that will inspire future generations of reporters.
