A newly constructed bridge in China’s Sichuan province, dubbed the Hongqi Bridge, partially fell apart on Tuesday, sending large pieces of concrete tumbling into a river below and enveloping the area in dense dust. This alarming event, captured on video, rapidly circulated on Chinese social media, intensifying worries about infrastructure reliability across the country.
The Hongqi Bridge, with a length of 758 meters, served as part of a key national roadway linking central China to Tibet. Local inspectors identified cracks and minor ground shifts on Monday, prompting a temporary closure of the bridge. Within just 24 hours, the bridge collapsed into the gorge adjacent to the Shuangjiangku Hydropower Station in Maerkang city.
Fortunately, no injuries have been reported as a result of the incident. Authorities credited early evacuations and the quick shutdown of the highway with averting a potential disaster. Initial investigations indicate that geological factors in the steep mountainous area may have significantly contributed to the collapse.
Experts are currently on-site to perform technical evaluations to ascertain if design flaws or construction defects played a role in this calamity. A thorough safety review of other nearby bridges and tunnels has also been initiated.
The Hongqi Bridge, situated about 625 meters above the canyon floor, was completed this year and opened to the public in September. It was designed to serve as a vital connector between Sichuan and the Tibetan Plateau, aimed at enhancing trade, tourism, and access to the region.
Local news reports revealed that warning signs emerged during an inspection that took place around 5:25 pm on Monday. Prompt action was taken by the authorities, who initiated an emergency response and evacuated the vicinity. The structure ultimately collapsed around 3:00 pm the next day.
Authorities have not yet disclosed when the impacted section of the highway will be reopened. Meanwhile, growing concerns are being voiced regarding quality assurance and safety monitoring in extensive infrastructure projects, especially in regions vulnerable to landslides and seismic risks.
The collapse of the Hongqi Bridge has rekindled public discussions about the resilience of newly constructed structures in China, with many netizens calling for enhanced transparency in building practices and more rigorous geological risk evaluations prior to the public opening of new infrastructure.
