Stolen Richard Mille Watch Valued at €1 Million During Cannes Festival

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

In an unfortunate incident at the ongoing Cannes Film Festival, a luxury Richard Mille watch, appraised between €700,000 and €1 million, was reported stolen from a hotel guest, according to a police source cited by Agence France-Presse (AFP).

The theft occurred at the renowned Palm Beach hotel, situated on the vibrant Boulevard de la Croisette, a hot spot during the festival. A large influx of visitors had congregated for festival activities when the theft unfolded.

Reports suggest the luxurious watch was taken during a busy moment near the hotel's restroom area. It is believed that the thieves capitalized on the crowded conditions and the pushing among attendees to execute the theft discreetly.

This expensive watch was part of the exclusive Richard Mille line, famed internationally for its high-value timepieces favored by celebrities, athletes, and affluent collectors.

Cannes authorities frequently contend with organized theft rings throughout the festival season. The city, welcoming thousands of elite attendees, often sees luxury watches, jewelry, and designer items targeted.

In the previous year, French prosecutors documented over 12 incidents of theft or attempted theft involving high-end watches in Cannes within two months.

Investigators reveal that numerous organized crime networks across Europe employ sophisticated techniques for reselling stolen luxury watches, including altering serial numbers and forging certificates and packaging to facilitate sales in international markets, potentially yielding significant profits.

With the Cannes Film Festival drawing global celebrities, executives, influencers, and affluent tourists annually, local authorities usually bolster security measures to protect attendees and deter luxury-related crimes during the event.
