The contentious legal battle over the estate of the late industrialist Sunjay Kapur has taken a new turn in the Delhi High Court, where his daughter, Samaira Kapur, has alleged that her university fees have gone unpaid for two months. This assertion has been promptly rejected by her stepmother, Priya Kapur, adding yet another layer of complexity to an already intricate case.
The court was considering an interim injunction plea filed by Samaira and her brother, Kiaan, to prevent Priya Kapur from selling or otherwise altering Sunjay Kapur’s assets while the validity of his will is under review. Senior Advocate Mahesh Jethmalani, representing the children, contended that Samaira, studying in the U.S., has been waiting for her educational fees to be paid, asserting that it is Priya's duty to cover these expenses as outlined in the matrimonial agreement.
In defense, Senior Advocate Rajiv Nayar, acting for Priya Kapur, dismissed the claims, asserting that all expenses for Karisma’s children have been fully addressed. He claimed there are no outstanding dues, labeling the assertion of unpaid university fees as erroneous.
This exchange prompted Justice Jyoti Singh to admonish both parties, emphasizing that emotional grievances should not cloud courtroom proceedings. The judge instructed Senior Advocate Shyel Trehan, also representing Priya Kapur, to ensure that such routine matters are handled privately in the future, rather than in court. The next hearing is set for 19 November.
This dispute over the estate commenced after Sunjay Kapur’s death on 12 June, reportedly due to a heart attack incurred while playing polo in London. In the aftermath, Samaira and Kiaan accused Priya Kapur of fabricating Sunjay’s will, asserting that he had always guaranteed them a fair share of the inheritance, which they contend is absent from the final will presented in court.
The unfolding legal drama has seen both sides level serious accusations, raising critical questions surrounding inheritance, asset management, and the will's legitimacy. As the case unfolds, the High Court is anticipated to scrutinize additional evidence and claims that will influence the distribution of the estate.
