Tragedy Strikes as Hyderabad Pilgrims Meet Fatal Fate in Saudi Bus Crash

Post by : Raina Nasser

Hyderabad, Nov 17, 2025: In a devastating incident in Saudi Arabia, a bus carrying Indian pilgrims met with a fatal accident, resulting in the loss of at least 42 lives, with the majority hailing from Hyderabad. The bus, traveling between Mecca and Medina, collided with a diesel tanker early Monday morning, engulfing in flames.

Initial investigations indicate that the collision occurred around 1:30 AM IST while many passengers were asleep, limiting their opportunity to escape as fire overtook the vehicle. The victims included women and children, but the total count is still being verified. Reports suggest only a single individual survived.

Upon hearing the tragic news, anguished families from Hyderabad flocked to the offices of Al Makkah Tours and Travels, the travel agency involved. Relatives expressed their sorrow and called for governmental aid to travel to Saudi Arabia to support the victims. One relative shared, “Seven members of my family were on the bus. Hearing about the accident has left us devastated.”

The Consulate General of India in Jeddah labeled the accident a “tragic” event and established a 24x7 helpline to assist affected families. The Indian authorities are working closely with Saudi officials, the Haj and Umrah Ministry, and involved travel agencies for identification processes, medical assistance, and repatriation of the deceased. Community volunteers have also mobilized to support the families on the ground in Medina.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, who is currently in Russia, expressed his profound condolences. On social media, he stated, “Our Embassy in Riyadh and Consulate in Jeddah are providing unwavering support to affected families. Heartfelt condolences to those grieving.”

Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy shared his sentiments of sorrow and ordered state officials to collaborate with the Ministry of External Affairs and Saudi representatives. A control room has been set up at the Telangana Secretariat to keep families updated and oversee relief activities.

Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi confirmed ongoing communication with officials at the Indian mission in Riyadh. “They are collecting details. I have also reached out to travel agencies regarding passenger information,” he noted. Owaisi urged the government for adequate medical care for the survivors and swift repatriation of the deceased.

This tragic incident highlights the risks pilgrims encounter while traveling, especially along the busy routes that connect Mecca and Medina. The event marks not only a profound personal tragedy but also raises essential concerns regarding the travel safety protocols and emergency readiness concerning Indian nationals abroad.

Ongoing investigations and relief operations are being pursued by authorities in both Saudi Arabia and India, focusing on immediate aid for families of the victims and ensuring accountability within travel operations. The accident has ignited a wave of condolences and calls for enhanced safety practices for pilgrims navigating international journeys.
