Concerns about air pollution in Delhi-NCR persist daily, prompting many to use masks, air purifiers, and houseplants for protection. Nutritionist Sonal Sureka highlights that safeguarding our health goes beyond external measures. A robust diet is essential for fortifying the body against pollution-related challenges.
According to her, food can serve as a protective barrier during times of poor air quality, requiring our bodies to seek additional nourishment to combat harmful particles. Sureka emphasizes the importance of incorporating foods rich in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory ingredients, which serve to shield the body's cells and enhance lung function.
She advocates for colorful meals during pollution periods. A diverse array of fruits and vegetables not only provides essential vitamins and minerals but also bolsters overall health. Whole foods, such as seasonal vegetables, fresh fruits, whole grains, nuts, seeds, and legumes, deliver superior nourishment compared to processed alternatives.
Protein intake is also crucial. Lean proteins like dal, paneer, eggs, fish, and chicken play an important role in strengthening muscles that assist in respiration. Staying hydrated is vital, as water aids in clearing mucus and maintaining moisture in the throat and airways.
Additionally, Sureka recommends herbal drinks that can soothe the throat and lungs. A simple preparation involving boiled water with tulsi leaves, black pepper, and a pinch of turmeric is suggested, which can be consumed twice daily to help alleviate nasal congestion and smog-induced irritation.
In conclusion, while pollution affects our air quality, dietary choices can enhance internal strength. Protective measures like masks and purifiers are effective externally, but a nutritious diet is critical for building resilience against polluted air. When made consistently, small dietary choices can fortify the body and mitigate adverse health effects over time.
