Hamilton Mall Shooting: Court Permits Identification of Teen Suspect

Post by : Shweta

In an ongoing investigation, Hamilton police have secured a court order allowing them to reveal the identity of a 14-year-old suspect connected to a tragic shooting at Jackson Square. The incident occurred on Friday evening, claiming the life of 16-year-old Nabil Askafe in what law enforcement describes as a targeted attack.

The suspect, a minor from Hamilton, faces a second-degree murder charge. Given the legal requirements for disclosing information about minors, police sought judicial approval for this release. The court's directive allows for the identification to be public until April 29, while efforts continue to find and apprehend the suspect.

The incident unfolded around 5 p.m. in the bustling shopping centre amidst a confrontation involving the victim and two other individuals. Authorities believe that one of these individuals was armed with a concealed firearm, larger than a standard handgun, which was utilized during the assault. The second individual is presumed unarmed, and authorities are encouraging them to come forward to aid the investigation.

Emergency services arrived swiftly, but tragically, the victim was found shortly after having moved a short distance, where he was later pronounced dead. This heartbreaking event has resonated deeply within the community, and officials are describing it as a profound loss for the victim’s family and friends.

Detective Robert Di Ianni has reached out to the suspect, urging them to seek legal representation and turn themselves in. Meanwhile, investigators are analyzing security footage and interviewing witnesses to reconstruct the events leading to the fatal shooting.

Following the incident, the shopping centre was temporarily closed but has since reopened following a thorough investigation. Police emphasize that the inquiry is ongoing, and they will provide additional information as it emerges.
