Guru Nanak Jayanti — also referred to as Gurpurab or Prakash Utsav — falls on 5 November 2025 and commemorates the 556th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the founding figure of Sikhism. The day is marked across India and by Sikh communities globally with devotional rites, public processions and community initiatives that underscore the enduring influence of his teachings.
Mornings often begin with Prabhat Pheris, devotional walks during which hymns in praise of the Guru are chanted. Nagar Kirtans remain a central public expression: the Guru Granth Sahib is carried in ornate palkis while congregants sing shabads and perform Gatka, the Sikh martial tradition. Gurudwaras are typically illuminated and decorated, attracting large gatherings and creating a solemn yet celebratory environment.
Langar, the community kitchen that provides free meals to all, continues to be a defining feature of Gurpurab observances. Serving food without distinction of religion, caste or social standing manifests the Sikh principles of seva (selfless service) and equality, and is treated as a primary way to honour the Guru on this occasion.
Guru Nanak Dev Ji was born in Talwandi (present-day Nankana Sahib, Pakistan) in 1469. His spiritual awakening around the age of 30 led him to propagate a universal message of devotion to one God, social equality and rejection of caste divisions. He championed honest labour, truthfulness and compassion, teachings later compiled in the Guru Granth Sahib, the central scripture guiding Sikh life.
Observance of the festival also involves exchanging greetings, quotations and reflective messages among family and communities. In the digital age, devotees share wishes and teachings via social media and messaging platforms, often highlighting themes of humility, peace, and communal service as living expressions of the Guru’s message.
The reach of Guru Nanak’s ideas extends beyond religious boundaries, influencing discourses on social justice and interfaith harmony. Gurpurab is therefore both a commemoration of his birth and a renewal of the values he promoted—spiritual guidance, equality and mutual respect.
As congregations mark Gurpurab in 2025, the day invites individuals to reflect on Guru Nanak’s life through devotional practice and acts of service. By participating in prayer, community kitchens and public observances, devotees reaffirm a legacy that continues to shape moral and social conversations centuries later.
