Guinea-Bissau General Becomes Transitional President After Coup

Post by : Saif Nasser

Guinea-Bissau’s political scene took a dramatic turn on Thursday as General Horta Nta Na Man was sworn in as the country’s transitional president, according to an army statement. The move followed a military takeover one day earlier, in which army officers announced they had removed President Umaro Sissoco Embalo from office.

The officers, calling themselves "The High Military Command for the Restoration of Order," declared the ouster in a televised statement on Wednesday. This action came amid ongoing unrest in the West African nation, which has a long history of political instability and coups.

The sudden change in leadership occurred just before provisional election results were expected. These results would have announced the outcome of a closely contested race between Embalo and Fernando Dias, a 47-year-old political newcomer who had emerged as Embalo’s main challenger.

Despite the political upheaval, the capital city of Bissau remained largely calm on Thursday. Soldiers patrolled the streets, while many residents stayed indoors. Banks and businesses remained closed, reflecting the uncertainty that grips the city.

Guinea-Bissau has been a hub for cocaine trafficking in recent years, adding complexity to its fragile political system. Analysts warn that the latest military intervention may heighten instability, as the country attempts to navigate both internal political tensions and external pressures.

The army has not yet detailed the transitional government’s plans or the timeline for new elections. Residents and the international community are watching closely, hoping for a peaceful transition and stability in the West African state.

The new transitional president, General Horta Nta Na Man, faces the dual challenge of restoring order while managing the country’s deep-seated political divisions and security concerns.
