In a significant advancement for minimally invasive lung surgery, Burjeel Medical City has achieved the UAE’s inaugural uniportal robotic lobectomy. This milestone reinforces Abu Dhabi's position as a leading center for healthcare innovation.

This groundbreaking procedure was conducted on a 37-year-old patient diagnosed with early-stage lung cancer. The state-of-the-art method involves removing a portion of the lung through a singular 3cm incision, utilizing robotic assistance to enhance precision.

The patient sought treatment following a persistent dry cough unresponsive to medication. Subsequent evaluations, including a CT scan and biopsy, confirmed the diagnosis of stage one lung cancer. A comprehensive assessment by a multidisciplinary medical team led to the recommendation for surgery.

Renowned consultant thoracic surgeon Dr. Taj Mohammed Fiyaz Chowdhry spearheaded the operation, employing the advanced da Vinci Xi system. The successful surgery spanned approximately four hours and was completed without complications.

Dr. Chowdhry highlighted that this innovative technique is particularly beneficial for cases of early-stage cancer with minimal lymph node involvement, enhancing patient recovery and overall outcomes.

Notably, the patient was able to leave the hospital just two days post-operation, significantly less than the standard five to seven-day recovery period associated with traditional surgeries. The swift recovery also allowed a return to work within a month.
