In a significant decision, Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt has commuted the death sentence of Tremane Wood to life in prison without the possibility of parole, acting just hours before Wood was slated for execution by lethal injection.
The 46-year-old Wood was convicted in 2004 for first-degree murder in the stabbing death of farmworker Ronnie Wipf during a robbery. Though the defense admitted his role in the robbery, they contended that he was not the one who committed the murder. Wood’s brother, Zjaiton Wood, who confessed to the killing, died in 2019 while incarcerated.
This decision was made after the Pardon and Parole Board of Oklahoma recommended clemency, with a close vote of 3-2 favoring the commutation. Families of the victims and other key witnesses, including surviving victim Arnold Kleinsasser, voiced their support for clemency, advocating for forgiveness over capital punishment.
Governor Stitt stated, “After a careful examination of all the facts and with thoughtful consideration, I have chosen to follow the Pardon and Parole Board's advice in commuting Tremane Wood's sentence to life without parole.”
Soon after the commutation, Wood was found unresponsive in his cell due to dehydration and stress from fasting since his last meal. He has since been hospitalized but is reported to be recovering.
Wood’s attorney, Amanda Bass Castro-Alves, expressed gratitude for Stitt’s courageous decision: “We deeply appreciate the leadership Governor Stitt has exhibited in showing mercy to Tremane Wood. This decision aligns with the wishes of Mr. Wipf's family and the surviving victim, offering them a measure of solace.”
There has been criticism regarding Wood's initial trial, with claims that his defense attorney had drug and alcohol issues, jeopardizing his defense.
Governor Stitt reiterated that clemency ensures Wood receives significant punishment, while also honoring the compassionate stance of the victims' families: “I extend my prayers to Ronnie Wipf's family and surviving victim Arnie; they exemplify Christian forgiveness and love.”
Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond expressed his dissatisfaction with the clemency decision, underscoring the commitment to public safety and ensuring Wood remains incarcerated.
This marks the second instance of clemency granted by Governor Stitt to a death row inmate since he took office in 2019. To date, Oklahoma has carried out two executions in 2025, and four in 2024.
