Google and Epic Reach Settlement to Revamp Play Store Practices

Google and Epic Reach Settlement to Revamp Play Store Practices

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

In a notable development for the mobile software market, Google and Epic Games have reached a settlement in a U.S. court to end a prolonged antitrust battle over Android app distribution and in-app purchases. The dispute dates back to Epic’s 2020 lawsuit accusing Google of monopolizing access and payments on Android devices.

Under the terms of the agreement, Google will implement reforms to the Play Store intended to lower costs, broaden consumer choice and create fairer conditions for developers. The package includes provisions permitting the installation of third-party app stores that satisfy new security criteria. Developers will also be authorised to point users to alternative payment systems both within apps and via external web links, with a service-fee cap set at either 9% or 20% for those transactions.

The case produced several high-profile legal moments, including a 2023 jury verdict favouring Epic and a broad injunction issued last year by U.S. District Judge James Donato. Google contended that some court-mandated changes risked weakening user protections and undermining legitimate competition. The matter proceeded through appeals, and the U.S. Supreme Court declined to pause parts of the injunction when asked by Google.

Observers say the settlement could materially alter the Android ecosystem by increasing developer flexibility while still preserving security safeguards for users. Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney described the deal as 'awesome,' framing it as a win for an open Android platform. Google reiterated that it has never admitted unlawful conduct and characterised the agreement as a pragmatic resolution.

The proposed settlement now awaits formal review and approval from Judge Donato at an upcoming court hearing.
