New York, Nov 19, 2025: An 18-karat-gold toilet named “America”, crafted by the Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan, fetched an astounding $12.1 million at a Sotheby’s auction in New York on Tuesday, solidifying its status as a striking artifact in contemporary art. This event occurred alongside Gustav Klimt’s Portrait of Elisabeth Lederer, which set a remarkable record at $236 million, marking a new high for modern art sales.
Weighing 101 kilograms (223 pounds), the fully functional gold toilet launched with an opening bid of $10 million and rapidly captured attention for its satirical commentary on excess wealth. Renowned for his boundary-pushing art pieces, Cattelan called “America” a critical reflection on extreme affluence. He once articulated, “No matter if you indulge in a $200 lunch or a $2 hot dog, you end up in the same place regarding toilets,” emphasizing the artwork's humorous yet incisive viewpoint on society.
Sotheby’s characterized the piece as a “sharp commentary on the intersection of art and economic value,” recognizing the dualism of art as both an object of cultural significance and a tradable commodity. Previously owned by a private collector, this piece is one of two produced by Cattelan in 2016, with the other having been notably displayed at New York’s Guggenheim Museum and offered to former President Donald Trump for a loan during an exhibition of Van Gogh.
The history surrounding the artwork is intriguing, marked by a prior incident where one of the original toilets was stolen from an exhibition at Blenheim Palace, the birthplace of Winston Churchill. While two individuals received convictions linked to the theft, the ultimate fate of the stolen toilet is uncertain, with speculation suggesting it may have been melted down.
The auction of “America” followed weeks of public display at Sotheby’s New York headquarters, attracting art aficionados, collectors, and critics eager to witness the piece ahead of the bidding. This groundbreaking sale signifies a rising trend in the art world where high-priced, controversial pieces gain significant global attention, igniting discourse on satire, luxury, and social critique.
Maurizio Cattelan continues to illustrate through his art the ability to engage with pressing societal issues, consumption patterns, and the disparities of wealth. With “America” now in private possession, it is poised to stay in the spotlight for the foreseeable future.
This sale, coupled with the record-setting portrait by Klimt, reinforces Sotheby’s New York as a top destination for major art auctions, merging historical masterpieces with modern artistic provocations in an inherently captivating and high-stakes market.
