Aviation operations across several continents were severely disrupted on Friday after Airbus released a critical alert stating that heightened solar radiation could interfere with essential flight-control data on A320-family aircraft, which are among the most used jets globally.
The precautionary measures communicated to airlines resulted in a wave of flight cancellations and delays, as airlines rushed to assess their fleets and implement necessary software updates.
Air France scrapped 35 flights on Friday and began evaluating additional cancellations for the weekend. Colombian airline Avianca indicated that nearly 70 percent of its fleet was affected by the software malfunction, anticipating substantial disruptions over the next ten days. American Airlines also initiated checks on around 340 A320s, warning passengers of possible delays during the update.
The potential malfunction was detected after a JetBlue-operated A320 experienced a serious in-flight control failure on October 30. The flight from Cancun to Newark had to make an emergency landing in Tampa after a sudden nosedive attributed to a computer malfunction, with injuries reported among passengers.
Airbus reported that approximately 6,000 A320-family jets in operation might need this critical software update. While most updates are anticipated to take a few hours, around 1,000 aircraft could require more extensive maintenance, leading to ongoing disruptions worldwide through December.
Thales, the manufacturer responsible for the flight control computer, confirmed that its hardware met all requisite standards but clarified that the problematic functionality was tied to software not within its purview. The Airbus advisory did not identify the software supplier, leaving some technical aspects unclear.
The European Union Aviation Safety Agency noted it was informed of the situation and advised passengers to brace for short-term disruptions, reaffirming that safety must take precedence over operational efficiency.
Despite the extensive repercussions, some airlines reported minimal disruption. United Airlines stated it hadn't experienced any impacts, offering no further details.
With over 12,000 A320-family jets sold since 1988, this alert presents one of the most significant challenges for airlines in recent times. As flight schedules begin to normalize, passengers are encouraged to remain vigilant for updates as technical fixes are applied.
