Marathi actress Girija Oak Godbole, who gained attention recently for her stunning blue saree appearance, has spoken out against the proliferation of AI-morphed images and videos across social media platforms. Using her Instagram, she communicated her feelings in Hindi, English, and Marathi, recognizing both the public interest in her and the troubling implications of viral popularity.
While appreciating the acclaim for her performances, Girija conveyed her fears regarding the potential influence of such materials on her 12-year-old son as he navigates the online world. “I have a 12-year-old son. Currently, he avoids social media, but in the future, he will engage with it. These images may be widespread now, but they’ll persist on the internet indefinitely,” she stated.
Girija expressed her feelings about the unexpected surge in visibility and the diverse responses it garners. “Numerous friends, family, and acquaintances have flooded me with posts and memes. Some are humorously clever, while others consist of AI-morphed portrayals that cross the line. These representations objectify me, which is unsettling,” she elaborated.
Recognizing the harsh realities of the digital era, Girija shared, “I’m active on social media, so I understand its dynamics. When something goes viral, there’s inevitably a surge of such images generated and circulated. The endless cycle continues as long as there’s interaction. What troubles me is the absence of boundaries—nothing appears too extreme to share.”
She concluded her message with a heartfelt request aimed at both creators and consumers of such content: “If you manipulate images of anyone—be it women, men, or others—into inappropriate contexts, reconsider your choices. Even if you’re not creating, by engaging with this content, you contribute to the issue. Please take a moment to think,” Girija urged.
Despite these challenges, Girija remains optimistic about the attention, hoping it will attract greater audiences to her work. “Overall, I value the recognition, and if it leads more viewers to my films, series, or plays, that would be wonderful. I appreciate your support as I strive to deliver compelling performances. See you in theaters soon! Thank you,” she remarked.
Girija Oak Godbole is set to appear in the upcoming web series Therapy Sherapy, featuring Gulshan Devaiah. This series delves into intricate human emotions and relationships, with an official release date yet to be revealed.
