Gil Gerard, the beloved actor famed for portraying the iconic sci-fi character William “Buck” Rogers, has passed away at the age of 82. His passing was confirmed by his manager, noting that he died in hospice care after a courageous fight against a rare and aggressive cancer. Shortly after his death, his wife, Janet Gerard, revealed a heartfelt message he had penned for fans, urging them to embrace life and pursue what brings joy and love.

Gerard gained prominence for his lead role in the television series “Buck Rogers in the 25th Century,” which ran from 1979 to 1981. The series resonated with audiences during a surge of interest in the science fiction genre that followed the success of Star Wars. The narrative followed a NASA pilot from the 20th century who awakens 500 years into a future filled with advanced technology and challenges, featuring memorable characters like his robot companion Twiki and space pilot Wilma Deering, portrayed by Erin Gray.

Hailing from Little Rock, Arkansas, Gerard transitioned from commercials into prominent acting roles in television and movies. His varied career included appearances in productions such as “Hear No Evil,” “Sidekicks,” and he later hosted the reality series “Code 3,” which showcased the heroics of firefighters across the U.S. He also guest-starred on several popular shows like “Days of Our Lives.”

In his later years, Gerard shared candid accounts of his struggles with addiction and his battle with weight management. His transformation was documented in the 2007 film “Action Hero Makeover,” which chronicled his health journey post-surgery. Married four times, he found lasting companionship with Janet for 18 years and was also the father of actor Gilbert Vincent Gerard. In his poignant final message, he reflected on his life's journey, expressing gratitude for the people, love, and experiences that shaped his existence.
