German law enforcement detained 18 people in a synchronized cross-border action aimed at an alleged online fraud ring suspected of laundering proceeds. The operation was executed in partnership with domestic payment firms and foreign police forces.
Prosecutors say the probe found that between 2016 and 2021 the group is believed to have misused credit card data of roughly 4.3 million individuals across 193 countries, resulting in reported losses exceeding €300 million.
Representatives from the public prosecutor's office and the Federal Criminal Police (BKA) said the raids form part of an ongoing campaign against large-scale cyber-enabled financial crime, highlighting the need for strengthened international cooperation with financial institutions.
Investigators are continuing to follow financial trails and communications to identify additional participants and to prevent future schemes, officials added.
The case underscores Germany's commitment to defending consumers and the stability of financial markets against sophisticated transnational cybercriminal networks.
