George Clooney has revisited a significant encounter from the late 1990s that fundamentally altered his approach to fame in a recent discussion. He acknowledged the inherent challenges of public life, revealing that outings often lead to an hour’s worth of interactions—a struggle during his early rise to stardom.
Initially, Clooney tended to stay inside, seeking refuge from the incessant attention that came with his breakthrough role in ER. A chance meeting with the legendary Paul Newman, however, transformed his outlook. Clooney recounted this life-changing moment while reflecting on the early pressures of celebrity that drove him to retreat.
The anecdote unfolds on the Warner Bros. lot, where Clooney was engaged in filming ER while Newman was busy with Message in a Bottle. As Clooney drove a studio golf cart, he spotted Newman and decided to stop and introduce himself. With Newman not recognizing him, the interaction was casual at first, but the situation quickly escalated.
As they conversed, passersby began calling out “George!” which slowly made Newman aware of Clooney’s rising fame. The realization dawned on Newman as he pieced together Clooney’s increasing prominence in Hollywood.
Upon recognizing Clooney, Newman imparted a timeless piece of advice: “George, don’t let them keep you at home.” Clooney grasped the essence of Newman’s message, which advised against actors isolating themselves from the public to guard their privacy. Instead, Newman highlighted that such withdrawal only diminishes one's experience of life.
This conversation brought Clooney a crucial realization; staying out of the limelight was not a form of protection, but a limit he was placing on himself. Newman’s wisdom prompted him to engage with the world rather than retreat into solitude. Clooney carried this lesson forward, mastering the balance of fame without confinement.
Though Clooney and Newman never shared a close friendship, the latter significantly influenced Clooney’s artistic trajectory. He often admires Newman’s remarkable performances, even playfully admitting to having borrowed from his style occasionally, though he claims he couldn’t replicate it as well. Clooney has particularly praised Newman’s role in The Verdict, highlighting it as one of cinematic history’s finest. Newman passed away in 2008, leaving a lasting impression on Clooney’s life.
Currently, Clooney is promoting his latest film, Jay Kelly, alongside Emily Mortimer, Billy Crudup, Riley Keough, Greta Gerwig, and Adam Sandler. With select theaters showing the film, it is set to stream on December 5. Even now, Clooney embodies Newman’s counsel as a reminder to embrace life fully and remain open to experiences rather than allowing fame to shut him off from the world.
