Two giant pandas, Huan Huan and Yuan Zi, residing in Beauval Zoo, France, are heading back to China after Huan Huan was diagnosed with kidney failure. The duo arrived in 2012 through China's 'panda diplomacy' initiative, which sends these beloved creatures to zoos globally as tokens of friendship.
Now aged 17, they were expected to remain in France until January 2027, but due to Huan Huan’s health, their return has been expedited. They will be taken to the Chengdu panda sanctuary in China for their retirement. The emotional farewell took place on a Tuesday, attended by hundreds of fans.
More than 200 supporters, undeterred by the cold, rainy weather, gathered to bid goodbye, with some wearing panda-themed attire. A couple from Bordeaux proudly shared that they had visited the pandas over a thousand times.
These pandas are recognized for being the first in France to successfully raise three cubs, much to the delight of visitors and contributing to the zoo's popularity, which saw nearly two million guests in 2023. The eldest cub, Yuan Meng, returned to China earlier this year, while the younger twins, Yuandudu and Huanlili, will stay at Beauval for now.
The zoo’s director noted that kidney disease is typical in older pandas like Huan Huan. Although the situation is sorrowful, there are hopes for continued collaboration with China to house pandas at the zoo beyond 2027.
The bond between the pandas and their caretakers, as well as visitors, has been deep. One panda keeper reflected on their time with the bears as unforgettable, especially celebrating the first panda birth in France.
While giant pandas are no longer labeled as 'endangered,' they continue to be considered 'vulnerable' globally. Only about 20 zoos outside of China host pandas, recognized as vital cultural and diplomatic icons.
Panda diplomacy is a longstanding practice, dating back to 1972 when China gifted pandas to the U.S., following a significant visit from President Nixon. These animals are seen as ambassadors of goodwill, enhancing international relationships.
