Fortescue Chairman Forrest Doubles Down on Renewables in Challenge to Trump

Fortescue Executive Chairman Andrew Forrest has reaffirmed his commitment to renewable energy, directly challenging U.S. President Donald Trump's recent dismissal of climate change. Speaking aboard Fortescue's Green Pioneer ship, Forrest criticized Trump's statement and invited the president to a debate, stating, "Sue me, but I'm saying you have no basis of fact to say that." The Green Pioneer is the world's first ship capable of running on green ammonia and diesel, symbolizing Fortescue's dedication to sustainable practices.

Fortescue's Commitment to Sustainability

Despite challenges, including the cancellation of a green hydrogen project in Arizona due to shifts in U.S. policy, Andrew Forrest remains resolute. Fortescue continues to pursue ambitious sustainability targets, recently acquiring Spanish wind technology company Nabrawind and signing an agreement to purchase wind turbines from Envision Energy.

The company also plans to deploy 300 to 400 battery-powered mining trucks, each capable of hauling 240-metric-ton loads, with deliveries scheduled between 2028 and 2030. These initiatives highlight Fortescue’s dedication to reducing carbon emissions, advancing green technologies, and leading the mining industry toward a low-carbon future.

Looking Ahead

Forrest emphasized that Fortescue is likely to exceed its target of ... fueled by growing external interest. He stated, "We will probably do more than that ... ." This commitment underscores Fortescue's leadership in the global transition to renewable energy, regardless of political opposition
