In a significant breakthrough, US authorities have charged Nazeer Hameed, a 43-year-old Indian man, for the murders of Sasikala Narra, aged 38, and her six-year-old son Anish, which occurred over eight years ago in their New Jersey home. Hameed was identified as a former coworker of Sasikala's husband, Hanu Narra, at a company in New Jersey. Following the murders, Hameed fled to India, evading law enforcement until a crucial DNA match linked him to the crime.
Unraveling the Case
On March 23, 2017, Hanu Narra returned to his residence in the Fox Meadow Apartments in Maple Shade, New Jersey, only to find his wife and son fatally injured. The investigation revealed defensive wounds on both victims, suggesting a violent struggle. Initial forensic evidence collected from the crime scene included a blood sample that did not match any of the victims or Hanu, which later became a pivotal clue in the investigation.
Due to stalking allegations against Hanu and their close proximity, Hameed was quickly labeled a suspect. After residing in India for six months post-murder, he continued to work for Cognizant Technologies, utilizing his skills to avoid capture.
Technological Advances in Crime Resolution
Investigators pursued Hameed for several years to obtain a DNA sample. After his refusal, they secured a court order in 2024 for Access to his work laptop. A DNA analysis from the device matched the blood sample gathered at the scene, solidifying Hameed's connection to the double homicide. This case exemplifies the role of digital forensics in addressing long-standing cold cases.
Understanding the Alleged Motive and Future Steps
While the exact motive behind Hameed's actions is still under investigation, initial findings suggest personal animosity towards Hanu Narra. US authorities are collaborating with the Department of Justice to secure Hameed's extradition from India to face the murder charges raised against him.
Emphasizing the importance of this case, Patrick Thornton, Chief of Investigations at the Burlington County Prosecutor’s Office, stated that perseverance, technological breakthroughs, and international cooperation are vital in achieving justice for the Narra family after nearly ten years of uncertainty.
A Global Perspective on Justice
This case illustrates the significance of digital evidence in contemporary criminal investigations and the challenges of securing justice across international borders. Families of victims endure prolonged suffering, and milestones like this highlight that even historical cold cases are susceptible to resolution.
As authorities prepare for extradition and prosecution, the narrative of Sasikala and Anish Narra serves as a testament to the relentless pursuit of justice and the dynamic tools that law enforcement utilizes in the shared digital age.
