Severe flooding and landslides have struck Central Vietnam, causing a tragic loss of at least 16 lives since this past weekend. Updated reports from the government on Thursday revealed that water levels are still rising in affected towns and villages.
In the last three days alone, certain areas have recorded over 1,500 millimetres of rain, overwhelming local rivers and drainage systems. This deluge has triggered landslides in mountainous regions and caused destruction in low-lying towns, with homes damaged and roads obstructed.
The affected area is vital for Vietnam's coffee industry and tourism, with popular beach resorts and coastal towns submerged, prompting evacuations for both residents and tourists to safer areas. Emergency services are being deployed to aid stranded individuals and supply essential food, water, and medical assistance.
Authorities have advised residents to stay indoors and refrain from travel in flood-prone zones. They also alerted the population to the possibility of additional landslides due to ongoing rain.
Vietnam frequently endures heavy rain and flooding during the monsoon season, with Central provinces particularly at risk owing to their geography and river systems. Emergency personnel are actively monitoring conditions to safeguard residents and to minimize further casualties.
High water levels are anticipated to persist in numerous towns, with the government preparing temporary shelters and relief materials for impacted communities. Citizens have been urged to remain cautious and heed safety guidelines.
