Resumption of Flights at Liege Airport Following Drone Incident

Resumption of Flights at Liege Airport Following Drone Incident

Post by : Raina Nasser

Liege, Belgium – Operations at Belgium’s Liege Airport have resumed after a drone sighting necessitated a temporary closure, as confirmed by the nation’s air traffic control on Friday. This marks the second airport disruption due to drones within a single week.

The Skeyes air traffic control reported a drone was seen over Liege Airport at approximately 06:30 GMT, resulting in a closure of about 30 minutes. “Every report warrants serious consideration,” stated Skeyes spokesperson Kurt Verwilligen, noting that flights are now operating safely again.

Earlier this week, drone sightings at both Brussels and Liege Airports forced numerous incoming flights to be diverted and some departures grounded. Authorities are increasingly worried about the rising number of drones near airports and military sites, which have disrupted air travel across Europe in recent times.

Belgium isn't the only nation facing this dilemma. Other countries like Sweden have also reported temporary airport closures due to drone activity, including one that halted flights on Thursday. Some security analysts have expressed concerns regarding possible “hybrid warfare” tactics, although Moscow has denied any involvement.

In light of the escalating situation, the Belgian government convened an emergency meeting with senior ministers and security officials on Thursday. Defence officials characterize the drone sightings as potentially coordinated attacks, emphasizing the pressing need for enhanced security around crucial infrastructure.

As the Belgian government seeks to address the rising threat of drone-related incidents, air travelers are encouraged to keep abreast of updates from airport authorities. These recent occurrences underscore the challenges unmanned aerial vehicles pose near busy airports, leading to increased vigilance and strengthened safety measures across Europe.
