Dr Jeremy London, a senior cardiac surgeon with over 25 years treating patients, shared five everyday habits he believes can support longer, healthier lives in an Instagram video. He argued that modest, consistent changes to daily routines can produce meaningful health benefits over time.
Dr London stressed the central role of the heart, noting it supplies oxygen and nutrients to all tissues. When cardiac function declines, organs and systems struggle to operate normally, so prioritising heart health is effectively prioritising overall survival and wellbeing.
First on his list is regular physical activity. He recommended combining resistance work to preserve muscle mass with aerobic activity for cardiovascular fitness. Simple, sustainable options such as brisk walking, light running, cycling or yoga can meaningfully support heart and lung function.
His second recommendation is a nutrient-dense diet. Meals should balance protein, fibre, unrefined carbohydrates and healthy fats. Dr London compared food to the body’s fuel, essential for cellular function, resilience against disease and sustained energy.
Third is adequate rest and recovery. He emphasised that sleep is when the body undertakes repair processes; consistent, quality sleep each night is crucial. He also endorsed brief daytime pauses to reduce stress and recalibrate the mind.
Fourth, he highlighted the health value of strong social ties. Regular contact with supportive family and friends lowers stress, enhances emotional wellbeing and correlates with better long-term health outcomes.
Fifth, Dr London mentioned the potential benefits of sauna or controlled heat therapy. When practised safely, heat exposure can promote relaxation and improved blood flow and may be associated with lower risks of certain cardiac and cognitive conditions. He advised adherence to safety guidance and moderation.
According to Dr London, these five practices are straightforward individually but become powerful when integrated into daily life. Together they support cardiovascular strength, mental health, restorative sleep and overall bodily function.
The surgeon also cautioned that this guidance is general in nature and not a substitute for personalised medical advice. Individuals with existing health conditions should consult their healthcare provider before making significant changes to exercise, diet or heat therapy routines.
