Building muscles is often seen as a dramatic transformation in the mirror. Bulging biceps or chiseled abs are commonly showcased on social media. But in real life, muscle gain is usually slower and more subtle. Fitness coach Eric Roberts recently shared seven unusual signs that indicate your body is getting stronger and building muscle, even if changes are not immediately visible.
1. Improved Grip Strength
One of the earliest signs of muscle growth can be seen in your hands. If your grip strength is improving and you can hold heavier weights or hold objects longer, it means your forearm muscles are developing.
2. Better Posture
Changes in posture can indicate stronger muscles, especially in the shoulders, back, and core. Roberts explained that standing taller, no longer slouching, and holding your body straight are good signs of muscle gain.
3. Less Joint Pain
Regular strength training helps protect joints and reduce pain. If your back, knees, and shoulders ache less, it is a sign that your muscles are supporting your joints more effectively.
4. Clothes Fit Differently
Muscle gain can change how your clothes feel. If shirts and pants feel tighter around the shoulders, arms, thighs, or glutes while staying loose around your stomach, it may indicate muscle growth without added fat.
5. Increased Hunger
Muscle burns more calories, which can naturally increase appetite. Feeling hungrier even without changing your diet is a sign that your metabolism is working harder to support your growing muscles.
6. Better Control of Weights
Gaining muscle is not just about lifting heavier weights. Improved motion, better form, and greater control during exercises are signs that your muscles are strengthening.
7. Less Soreness After Workouts
Finally, experiencing less soreness after exercise is a key indicator of progress. As your muscles adapt and recover faster, your body is becoming stronger.
Muscle building is a gradual process. While visible changes in the mirror are rewarding, these subtle signs help you understand your progress along the way. Paying attention to improved strength, posture, and recovery can be more meaningful than just measuring your appearance.
Roberts’ guidance reminds fitness enthusiasts that muscle gain is more than appearance—it’s about function, strength, and overall health. Even if dramatic results take time, these small indicators show that your efforts in the gym are paying off.
