On Wednesday, the Queen Jenuvia 2, a ferry carrying 267 individuals, ran aground on rocks near South Korea’s south-eastern coast. This incident necessitated a significant rescue operation as the vessel became stranded close to the uninhabited Jogdo Island in Sinan County, on its route from Jeju Island to Mokpo City.
Fortunately, all onboard were rescued without any fatalities, though 27 individuals did report minor injuries such as bruises. The 26,000-ton ferry has since been secured at a nearby port, while investigations are in progress.
Following the grounding, the South Korean coast guard has taken action by arresting individuals as part of an investigation to ascertain whether Captain or navigation errors contributed to the accident. A thorough inquiry is underway to uncover the facts and to avert future incidents.
Witness accounts reveal the trauma experienced by passengers as the ferry hit the rocks. One survivor remarked, “There was a loud bang, followed by the ship leaning to one side. We were instructed to don life jackets, which we did as we gathered on the top deck.” Another passenger, Kim Namhyun, a diving instructor, expressed, “I feared for my life. Reflecting on the Sewol ferry disaster, I knew I had to stay calm and listen to safety instructions.”
This incident took place in proximity to the site of the 2014 Sewol ferry disaster, a tragedy claiming over 300 lives. This haunting memory has led South Korean authorities to enhance safety protocols since then.
The grounding of Queen Jenuvia 2 underscores persistent safety concerns in South Korea’s coastal waters. Authorities are dedicated to a comprehensive investigation focusing on human error and mechanical issues, including scrutiny of navigation practices, crew training, and ship equipment to ensure the safety of future ferry operations.
Given that ferry travel remains vital for connecting South Korea’s islands with the mainland, there is increasing pressure on officials to bolster safety measures. While the successful rescue of all 267 aboard highlights emergency response achievements, the grounding incident serves as a vital reminder of the inherent risks in maritime travel across rocky coastlines.
