Deadly Russian Drone Strikes Claim 20 Lives in Ternopil, Ukraine

Post by : Raina Nasser

Ternopil, Ukraine — November 19, 2025: Recent missile and drone strikes by Russia in western Ukraine have tragically claimed the lives of at least 20 individuals, including two children, while injuring 66 others. This series of attacks represents one of the most severe assaults on the area since the onset of the full-scale conflict in February 2022. Reports indicate that the strikes specifically targeted two residential blocks in Ternopil, resulting in extensive damage and numerous individuals trapped beneath the debris.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has confirmed that Russia unleashed over 470 drones along with 47 missiles in various western regions, leading to “significant destruction.” Other areas impacted included Lviv and Ivano-Frankivsk, while three districts in the northern city of Kharkiv faced drone strikes, resulting in injuries to more than 30 people.

The destruction in Ternopil was particularly catastrophic, with videos shared by Zelensky revealing one of the targeted apartment blocks collapsing between the third and ninth floors. Smoke billowed from the building's windows, and small fires continued to burn outside as rescue teams searched for survivors amidst the rubble. The city was filled with the sounds of sirens, highlighting the scale of the emergency.

Additionally, energy facilities, transportation networks, and civil infrastructure suffered damage throughout the region, leading to power outages in multiple cities. In Ivano-Frankivsk, it was reported that two out of the three injured were children, illustrating the indiscriminate nature of these assaults. The regional leader in Lviv confirmed a local energy facility was also struck, disrupting power supplies in the area.

These strikes occurred soon after Ukraine announced firing US-provided long-range ATACMS missiles at targets within Russia, signifying a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict. Russia stated that four of the missiles targeted Voronezh but claimed that they were intercepted by air defense systems.

The attacks coincide with President Zelensky’s visit to Ankara, Turkey, aimed at reviving US-led diplomatic efforts and discussing matters with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Reports suggest that US special envoy Steve Witkoff is collaborating with Russian representative Kirill Dmitriev to explore a potential peace agreement, although the Kremlin has denied any participation in the Ankara discussions.

Additional tensions were reported after a Russian drone breached Romanian airspace, traversing through Ukraine and Moldova before returning to Romania. In response, the Romanian and German air forces scrambled jets, while Poland temporarily closed two southeast airports following the attacks in western Ukraine.

As Ukraine nears the fourth anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2026, both countries find themselves in a stalemate regarding peace negotiations. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov reiterated earlier this month that the conditions for a peace settlement remain unchanged from the framework announced by President Vladimir Putin in 2024.

Analysts caution that these tragic strikes and persistent drone incursions pose a growing risk to civilians and infrastructure across western Ukraine. The international community continues to advocate for restraint and enhanced diplomatic initiatives to avert further humanitarian crises.

With countless residents in Ternopil and neighboring western cities now grappling with the aftereffects of these airstrikes, the human cost of the conflict continues to escalate, underscoring the urgent necessity for a resolution and protection of civilians in Ukraine's war-torn regions.
