Central Vietnam is grappling with devastating floods and relentless downpours that have taken the lives of at least 41 individuals since the weekend. Rescue teams are still searching for nine people who remain unaccounted for. More than 52,000 residences are under water, with approximately 500,000 households and businesses facing power outages. Emergency evacuations have relocated tens of thousands of residents to safer areas.
Rainfall in certain locales has exceeded 1.5 meters (5 feet) in just three days, exceeding the flood levels recorded during the catastrophic floods of 1993 in some regions. The coastal towns of Hoi An and Nha Trang, along with significant coffee-growing districts in the central highlands, are experiencing the most severe impacts. Farmers in Dak Lak province, noted for its coffee production, are facing hardships as recent storms have already damaged their crops.
Vietnam has endured extreme weather patterns this year, resulting in an estimated $2 billion in damages from natural disasters between January and October. Recent typhoons, Kalmaegi and Bualoi, have added to the toll of destruction and loss of life.
Emergency response teams including military personnel and police have been deployed to create temporary shelters and assist with evacuations. Significant road networks have been compromised by landslides, causing severe traffic disruptions. In Lam Dong province, a section of the Mimosa Pass collapsed, stranding vehicles, with one bus narrowly escaping a plunge into the ravine. Multimedia reports reveal individuals trapped on rooftops and bridges uprooted from their foundations.
Local entrepreneurs are also facing an uphill battle as floodwaters inundate their establishments. A restaurant owner in Nha Trang expressed, “I worry about the furniture in my shops, but there’s little I can do now. The water doesn’t seem to be receding anytime soon, as the rain is unyielding.”
Earlier this month, Typhoon Kalmaegi resulted in at least five deaths in central Vietnam, battering the coast with fierce winds, uprooting trees, and damaging structures. Typhoon Bualoi claimed at least 11 lives when it affected central and northern regions in September. Experts are increasingly concerned that climate change is exacerbating the intensity and frequency of such tropical storms.
Authorities are vigilantly monitoring the situation and cautioning that persistent heavy rains may continue through Sunday, advising residents to remain vigilant and heed evacuation orders.
