Fairphone Expands to US Market with Modular, Repair-Friendly Headphones

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

Dutch ethical electronics maker Fairphone has launched in the United States, introducing a range of repairable headphones as an initial step toward a future smartphone introduction. The move underscores the brand's focus on durable, sustainable consumer tech.

Growth and Market Potential

The company reported robust momentum in 2025: third-quarter revenue rose 61% year-on-year, with device unit sales up 61%, audio product sales climbing 40%, and spare-part purchases increasing 41%. Fairphone now aims to translate its European audio results to the U.S. market, despite an existing 34% tariff on its goods. The firm continues to emphasise transparency across its supply chain, from responsibly sourced minerals to traceable components.

Strategic U.S. Launch

Fairphone plans to sell the headphones initially via Amazon, choosing an online entry point into a market where over 90% of smartphones move through carrier channels. The company describes the rollout as phased and cautious, reflecting shifting tariff and retail dynamics.

Aiming at Right-to-Repair Demand

CEO Raymond van Eck said the U.S. is increasingly aligned with right-to-repair principles, driven by consumers and policymakers pushing back on costly, hard-to-fix devices. He noted that while trade costs and tariffs can change, consumer appetite for gear that can be repaired and kept longer remains steady.

Long-Term Support as a Differentiator

Fairphone highlights lengthy aftercare as a competitive edge. The Fairphone 6 carries an unusually extended lifecycle for the category: eight years of overall support, five years of warranty coverage and spare parts availability through 2033. The strategy is designed to cut electronic waste and promote more considered ownership.

With sustainability and repairability increasingly influencing purchase choices, Fairphone's U.S. debut could signal a shift toward less disposable electronics by offering consumers practical, repair-first alternatives.
