Islamabad, Pakistan – A devastating explosion occurred outside a local court in Islamabad on Tuesday afternoon, claiming the lives of at least 12 individuals and injuring many others, plunging the area into turmoil. While officials have not yet confirmed the cause, local reports indicate that a gas cylinder may have exploded inside a parked vehicle.
The blast impacted a normally busy location outside the courthouse, damaging numerous cars and primarily affecting individuals attending hearings. One witness, Rustam Malik, a lawyer at the scene, recounted the horror: “It was pure chaos, people and lawyers were rushing into the complex. I saw two bodies lying near the gate, and several vehicles were ablaze.”
Emergency services quickly arrived, transporting the wounded to local hospitals while conducting a forensic examination of the site. Police have refrained from disclosing additional details as their investigation unfolds.
Heightened Security Fears Amid Rising Violence
The Islamabad explosion follows just one day after Pakistani security forces successfully thwarted a hostage-taking attempt at an army college in Wana, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. A suicide bomber and five assailants targeted the cadets overnight. Thankfully, two attackers were neutralized, with no reported casualties among students or faculty, though around 16 civilians and soldiers suffered injuries, and significant damage occurred to neighboring properties.
Wana is recognized as a key area for the Pakistani Taliban and other extremist factions, making security operations paramount. Investigators are currently exploring potential links between the Tuesday explosion and militant groups, as well as the possibility of it being an accidental occurrence.
Regional Security Context
The Islamabad blast arrives at a time of escalating concerns regarding cross-border terrorism, occurring a day after a parked vehicle detonated near Delhi’s Red Fort in India, resulting in 13 fatalities. Investigations revealed that Umar Un Nabi, a doctor from Jammu and Kashmir, was responsible for the Delhi incident, emphasizing the ongoing regional threat posed by vehicle attacks.
Security forces in both Pakistan and India are now on heightened alert, reassessing their protocols in public spaces and court areas, as they continue to investigate the Islamabad incident and strive to protect civilians in densely populated urban environments.
