Explosions Rock Dhaka Airport as Hasina Verdict Approaches

Post by : Raina Nasser

DHAKA — Two explosive devices went off near Dhaka airport on Thursday evening, raising alarm as Bangladesh anticipates Monday’s ruling in a significant war crimes trial against the ousted former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Fortunately, there were no reported injuries from the explosions, but the detonations intensified fears in a capital already on edge from recent political turmoil and intermittent violence. Authorities responded swiftly, sealing off the area and initiating an inquiry to track down those responsible.

Sheikh Hasina, 78, is being tried in absentia for crimes against humanity linked to a violent crackdown on student protests in mid-2024. Following her removal from power in August of the previous year, she took refuge in India while the trial unfolds.

These bombings occur at a particularly delicate moment for Bangladesh, characterized by rising political tensions stemming from large-scale protests and clashes between supporters of the former government and law enforcement. Experts caution that increased tensions could ignite further protests in the capital and its neighboring areas ahead of the verdict.

In response, security forces have ramped up patrols throughout Dhaka and reinforced security protocols around vital government sites, airports, and transit points to avert additional incidents. Officials are calling on citizens to stay alert and report any suspicious activities.

Although the exact motives for the attacks remain unclear, analysts believe they could be linked to political groups aiming to sway public opinion in light of the approaching court decision. The impending verdict in Hasina’s case holds substantial implications for the political landscape of Bangladesh.

As the nation braces for the verdict on Monday, authorities confront the critical task of upholding peace and preventing an escalation of violence amidst a fragile political atmosphere.
