DHAKA — Two explosive devices went off near Dhaka airport on Thursday evening, raising alarm as Bangladesh anticipates Monday’s ruling in a significant war crimes trial against the ousted former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Fortunately, there were no reported injuries from the explosions, but the detonations intensified fears in a capital already on edge from recent political turmoil and intermittent violence. Authorities responded swiftly, sealing off the area and initiating an inquiry to track down those responsible.
Sheikh Hasina, 78, is being tried in absentia for crimes against humanity linked to a violent crackdown on student protests in mid-2024. Following her removal from power in August of the previous year, she took refuge in India while the trial unfolds.
