Experts Caution Against Classifying Aging as a Disease

Post by : Saif Nasser

Aging is an inherent aspect of human life. However, a faction of scientists has proposed categorizing aging as a disease to garner more research, funding, and medical focus. Many specialists, however, voice strong opposition, warning that such a designation could inflict societal harm.

The issue gained traction in 2018 when the World Health Organization included a term for “old age” in its International Classification of Diseases. This move met with widespread discontent, as many contended that age should not equal illness. Following considerable backlash, the WHO revised this terminology in 2021 to “ageing-associated declines in intrinsic capacities,” opting for a more respectful descriptor.

Some in the scientific community argue for the disease classification of aging, citing its correlation with increased risks of illnesses like cancer, heart disease, and hypertension as one ages. They assert this approach could support the development of effective treatments for age-related conditions.

Conversely, many experts argue that portraying aging as a disease oversimplifies the concept. This framing sends a harmful message that older adults are frail or broken, implying that they require “fixing.” Such language can amplify stigma, leaving older individuals feeling alienated or unwell despite living vibrant, active lives.

Moreover, aging encompasses more than mere physical decline; it embodies a phase of emotional maturity, wisdom, and resilience. Numerous older adults express feelings of greater happiness, confidence, and adeptness in navigating life's challenges. Focusing solely on the negative aspects detracts from the positive dimensions of aging.

Experts highlight that defining aging as a disease may further entrench ageist mindsets and incite fears around growing older, perpetuating unattainable ideals of eternal youth. They advocate for a societal shift towards honoring aging as a natural progression, with healthcare systems supporting older adults without framing aging as a medical concern.
