Thirty years have passed since the untimely demise of Selena Quintanilla-Pérez, a revered icon in Tejano music, yet her impact on Latin culture remains profound. A forthcoming documentary titled Selena Y Los Dinos: A Family’s Legacy, directed by Isabel Castro and produced by Selena’s siblings Suzette and AB Quintanilla III, seeks to commemorate and uphold her legacy. The film makes its debut on Netflix this Monday.
“Who better than us to tell our story?” Suzette Quintanilla states, highlighting the significance of a familial viewpoint.
The project was initiated when the Quintanilla family approached Castro, captivated by her previous work, Mija. Castro recalls, “Suzette and I immediately connected because we share the experience of being older sisters.” Suzette adds, “She truly understood the challenges of navigating a bicultural identity as a Mexican American.”
The documentary utilizes a treasure trove of materials the family refers to as “the vault.” For years, Castro and the Quintanillas meticulously examined DVDs, VHS tapes, raw film canisters, and digital archives to curate footage that encapsulates Selena’s life—not merely as a star, but as a sister, daughter, and friend.
Intimate moments include home recordings made by Suzette, a heartfelt letter from Selena to her husband Chris Pérez, and nostalgic scenes from the family's iconic tour bus, Big Bertha. Marcella Quintanilla, Selena’s mother, also speaks for the first time, sharing cherished memories and personal photographs.
Castro views the documentary as a chance to portray Selena as a vibrant young woman, not solely as a cultural figure. “The home videos serve as a reminder that she was just 23,” Castro reflects.
Although previous narratives—like the 1997 film starring Jennifer Lopez and a series on Netflix from 2020—have documented Selena’s life and death, this film intentionally refrains from focusing on her murder. “We do not focus on the murder,” asserts Castro. “This is about a Latina’s joy and strength, about her life and our collective journey.”
Moreover, the film sheds light on oft-overlooked facets of Selena’s narrative, such as her ability to speak both languages fluently, her rise within the music industry, and her controversial marriage to Pérez. Relying solely on interviews with the Quintanilla family and members of Los Dinos, the documentary offers deeply personal insights without external commentary.
Suzette aspires for the film to resonate with Latino audiences and inspire younger generations. “This continues her legacy and ours,” she expresses. “And I hope it motivates anyone with a dream to pursue it.”
Selena Y Los Dinos: A Family’s Legacy is a tribute to life, music, and the lasting impact of an icon whose influence endures across generations.
