‘Everytime’ Captures Un Certain Regard at Cannes

Post by : Shakul

Austrian director Sandra Wollner has garnered the prestigious top award in Cannes' Un Certain Regard section for her heartfelt film, Everytime. The recognition was given during the festival's awards ceremony, lauding the film's nuanced narrative and emotional resonance.

The Un Certain Regard category is widely respected at Cannes, celebrated for showcasing unique and groundbreaking cinema beyond the primary competition. Historically, this section has been a springboard for many influential filmmakers worldwide.

In her heartfelt acceptance address, Wollner emphasized the necessity of maintaining authenticity and personal narratives in filmmaking, especially as artificial intelligence permeates creative spaces. She cautioned against the dangers of generic storytelling, advocating for distinctive, emotional, and profoundly human narratives in film.

Critics have lauded Everytime for its sensitive depiction of grief, loss, and the healing journey within a family grappling with an unforeseen death. ScreenDaily noted the film as an intricately woven and emotionally stirring piece that profoundly affects its viewers.

Alongside Wollner’s victory, the festival recognized multiple international works. Notably, Elephants in The Fog marked a milestone as the first Nepali film to win the jury prize in the Un Certain Regard category, with director Abinash Bikram Shah celebrating this milestone with the cast and crew.

The special jury prize went to the animated French film Iron Boy, while the best actress award was collectively awarded to Marina de Tavira, Daniela Marin Navarro, and Mariangel Villegas for their performances in Forever Your Maternal Animal.

Bradley Fiomona Dembeasset secured the best actor accolade for his role in Congo Boy, which tells the story of a teenager pursuing music amid turmoil in the Central African Republic.

Film analysts suggest that this year’s Un Certain Regard lineup marks a significant shift towards embracing global diversity, showcasing deeply personal and socially pertinent narratives from filmmakers across Europe, Asia, Africa, and Latin America.
