EU Immigrant Population Surpasses 64 Million in 2025

Post by : Shweta

In 2025, the European Union's immigrant population ascended to a remarkable 64 million, reflecting a pivotal change in migration patterns within the area. A recent report reveals that foreign-born individuals make up approximately 14% of the EU’s overall populace, indicating consistent growth over the last decade.

According to data sourced from Eurostat and the UNHCR, this immigrant population has surged from nearly 40 million a decade ago. The migrant count rose by 2.1 million this year, although the growth rate shows a slight deceleration in comparison to 2024, hinting at a gradual stabilization in migration trends.

Germany stands out as the primary destination for immigrants in the EU, accommodating close to 18 million foreign-born residents. This number has increased significantly from around 10.5 million fifteen years prior, underscoring Germany’s central role as a migration hub. Notably, about 72% of these immigrants are of working age, which substantially influences the nation's labor market and economic activity.

In addition to accommodating the largest immigrant population in the union, Germany also shelters the most refugees, with approximately 2.7 million individuals seeking asylum within its territory. This emphasizes the country’s key role in both economic migration and humanitarian efforts.

On the other hand, Spain is experiencing the quickest increase in its immigrant numbers, having welcomed around 700,000 new foreign-born residents within just a year. This rapid growth signifies evolving migration trends, making southern EU countries increasingly popular destinations.

Nonetheless, the overall rise in the immigrant demographic comes alongside a notable decline in asylum applications across the EU, plummeting by 26.6% in 2025 compared to the prior year. This suggests that while long-term migration is on the rise, the influx of new asylum seekers is tapering off.

In summary, the newest statistics illustrate migration as a fundamental element influencing the demographic and economic framework of the EU. While growth persists, the diminished pace combined with the drop in asylum requests reflects a shifting dynamic in migration patterns across the region.
