EU Parliament to Vote on Fund Supporting Women Seeking Abortions Abroad

EU Parliament to Vote on Fund Supporting Women Seeking Abortions Abroad

Post by : Saif Nasser

The European Union's parliament is preparing to vote on a plan that would help women from countries with strict abortion rules access care in other EU nations. The initiative, called "My Voice, My Choice," proposes using EU funds to pay for abortions for women from countries like Malta and Poland, where access is very limited, and for places like Italy and Croatia, where it can be difficult to get the procedure.

Supporters say the plan will make abortions safer and help women who cannot afford to travel abroad. Dr. Isabel Stabile from Malta, who helped gather signatures for the initiative, said, "It would place us on equal grounds as other European citizens."

In recent years, many European countries have made abortion easier to access. The UK decriminalized abortion, and France made it a constitutional right. However, far-right parties in some countries oppose abortion, and their growing influence has created political challenges for such initiatives.

Opponents argue that the plan interferes with national laws and traditional values. Elisabeth Dieringer of the Patriots for Europe group said, "Sending women to countries that are more liberal is an attack on national order. This ideological abuse of power is something we will not accept at EU level."

The vote in the European Parliament in Strasbourg is expected after midday, and analysts believe the plan is likely to pass. If approved, the European Commission will have until March to decide whether to implement it.

Leading up to the vote, opponents held conferences in Strasbourg and campaigned with groups like One of Us and the European Centre for Law and Justice. They have argued that the EU should focus on supporting maternity and family care rather than funding abortions abroad.

Proponents hope the plan will ensure that women in countries with strict laws can safely access the medical care they need, reducing the risks of unsafe procedures and financial barriers.
