In Vietnam, non-communicable diseases are rapidly emerging as a major public health challenge, as health professionals alert the public to the dangers of ignoring early signs. Thousands continue to overlook warnings of chronic conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular issues until they escalate into serious health crises.
Medical practitioners noted that many patients only learn of their chronic health issues after suffering critical events like strokes or heart attacks. They strongly recommend that individuals undertake routine health check-ups and embrace lifestyle changes to mitigate the rising tide of non-communicable illnesses.
Take the case of Khuat Ngoc Ha, an eighty-two-year-old from Phuc Tho, who found out about his hypertension during a routine health check, despite feeling perfectly fine. After thorough medical guidance, he became aware of the severe consequences of uncontrolled hypertension, such as stroke and cardiovascular diseases. He has since adhered to a strict medication regimen, altered his diet, and maintained regular doctor visits, which have stabilized his health.
In contrast, sixty-six-year-old Le Van Hoang from Gia Lam only discovered he had high blood pressure after suffering a stroke linked to cerebral infarction, resulting in facial paralysis and difficulties with speech. He was promptly treated at Gia Lam General Hospital, where emergency thrombolytic procedures stabilized his health.
Medical professionals at Gia Lam General Hospital report that about 6,000 patients are currently receiving treatment for hypertension and diabetes. The hospital has enhanced its disease management tactics through early detection, ongoing monitoring, and risk assessment initiatives. They noted that nearly 60% of patients in certain departments are admitted due to hypertension-related ailments, particularly among older adults with pre-existing health conditions.
Experts warn that non-communicable diseases often progress gradually and show subtle symptoms early on. Common risk factors include smoking, poor diet, lack of exercise, alcohol use, and environmental pollution. Many individuals fail to acknowledge these risks until their conditions become severe and difficult to manage.
Healthcare providers urge individuals to regularly track their blood pressure at home and adhere to healthful lifestyle practices. Recommendations include lowering salt, sugar, and unhealthy fats intake, while encouraging physical activity and ensuring sufficient sleep. Importantly, they emphasize the need for consistent adherence to prescribed medications and advise against discontinuing treatment without professional guidance.
Medical experts believe that increased public awareness, timely health assessments, and effective disease management can significantly reduce the toll from chronic diseases. Authorities assert that proactive health measures and lifestyle adjustments are the most effective strategies against the challenges posed by non-communicable diseases and their severe consequences.
