Eleven Injured in Grizzly Bear Encounter in Canada During School Outing

Post by : Raina Nasser

A horrifying grizzly bear encounter left eleven individuals injured, comprising students and teachers, while they were enjoying a nature walk in Bella Coola, British Columbia, Canada. This distressing event occurred on Thursday afternoon on a well-frequented trail approximately 700 kilometres northwest of Vancouver.

As reported by local officials, a group of fourth and fifth graders from Acwsalcta School found themselves under threat when a grizzly bear unexpectedly charged at them. The sudden assault resulted in chaos as teachers and adult guardians endeavoured to shield the children.

Emergency responders confirmed that two individuals sustained critical injuries, while an additional two experienced serious harm. The other affected individuals were treated on site. It was noted that one teacher bore the brunt of the attack in an attempt to protect the students and was subsequently airlifted for medical assistance.

Following the occurrence, the Nuxalk Nation issued a public warning, advising residents to remain indoors as the bear was still at large. Police and conservation officers equipped with protective gear initiated a search of the vicinity to mitigate further risks.

Parents voiced their distress regarding the ordeal as children recounted their fears. One mother expressed how her ten-year-old son was so near to the bear that he could “feel its fur” as it brushed past him. She added that teachers attempted to employ bear spray to deter the animal; however, some students were accidentally affected by the spray amid the chaos.

The school declared its closure for Friday and pledged to provide counselling services for students and staff. The community conveyed its deep concern and a sense of relief that the outcome wasn’t more disastrous, labeling the incident as one of the most alarming experiences the school has encountered.

Authorities remain vigilant in monitoring the area and continue to advise locals to exercise caution as the search for the bear progresses.
