Can Electrolytes Mixed With Alcohol Mitigate Hangovers? Insights from a UCLA Doctor

Post by : Saif Nasser

In recent times, mixing electrolyte powders with alcohol has gained popularity among social media users as a remedy for hangovers. Videos showcase individuals incorporating these sachets into their drinks, dubbing it a “hangover solution.” But is this method truly effective? A doctor from UCLA offers a straightforward clarification.

Dr. Myro Figura, an anesthesiologist affiliated with the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Centre and UCLA Santa Monica Medical Centre, discussed the legitimacy of this trend in a video released on November 11.

Do electrolytes actually aid when mixed with alcohol?

Dr. Figura acknowledges that while electrolytes do provide some assistance, it's limited. He mentioned that hangovers often stem from dehydration and the loss of vital minerals. Electrolytes can help replenish these minerals and assist in maintaining hydration.

Thus, combining electrolytes with alcohol may alleviate some hangover symptoms.

However, Dr. Figura cautions against overreliance on this method. The portrayal on social media may give the impression that electrolytes can completely eliminate hangovers. The reality, he asserts, is different as alcohol’s effects on the body are multifaceted, and electrolytes alone cannot counteract all of them.

What implications does this have for you?

While electrolytes might help mitigate morning-after discomfort, they are not a miraculous remedy. Overindulgence in alcohol can still lead to hangovers, regardless of electrolyte consumption.

Experts emphasize that the most effective way to avoid hangovers is quite straightforward: pace your drinking, stay hydrated with water in between, enjoy a meal before drinking, and understand your limits.

In conclusion, while electrolytes might provide a slight advantage, they cannot completely eliminate hangovers, contrary to what social media might suggest.
