Expert Tips for Asthma Management Amidst Urban Pollution

Post by : Saif Nasser

Residents of Delhi and NCR are grappling with alarming air quality, severely impacting those living with asthma. As smoke, dust, and harmful gases fill the air, every inhale poses challenges for individuals with sensitive lungs. Asthma leads to inflammation and narrowing of the airways, while pollution exacerbates the strain on the respiratory system, complicating everyday activities such as walking or exercising. With Air Quality Index values escalating dangerously, healthcare professionals emphasize the need for vigilance and adjustment in daily routines for safety.

To help individuals navigate these challenges, Dr. Bharat Gopal, a senior director specializing in respiratory and sleep medicine at Medanta in Gurugram, offers practical strategies for asthma management. He underscores the importance of establishing a clean air environment to safeguard lung health, as outdoor air teems with tiny particles that can inflame the respiratory system. Notably, particulate matter, particularly PM2.5, can easily penetrate the lungs, worsening asthma symptoms and heightening the likelihood of sudden attacks.

A crucial step is to routinely check the air quality index prior to heading outside. Dr. Gopal recommends utilizing a reliable app to monitor AQI levels daily. Readings that exceed 200, or even 400, indicate toxic air, suggesting that outdoor activities could provoke difficulties for asthma patients. He advises minimizing outdoor activities during peak pollution times and scheduling essential errands when air quality is more favorable. For example, outdoor joggers should consider moving workouts inside, as the adverse effects of polluted air outweigh the benefits of exercise.

Creating a clean indoor environment is also vital, as external air remains uncontrollable. Dr. Gopal suggests improving indoor air quality by using an effective air purifier featuring a HEPA filter in key living spaces and bedrooms. On days of high pollution, it is beneficial to keep windows and doors sealed. Furthermore, while traditional dusting can disperse pollutants back into the air, using wet mops and cloths is preferable. Incorporating certain indoor plants like money plants and peace lilies can also help absorb toxins and naturally purify the air.

Medication plays a crucial role in asthma management. Dr. Gopal cautions against skipping preventive inhalers, as many individuals hesitate to take their medication until symptoms arise, which can be dangerous. Consistent use of medication is essential to provide anti-inflammatory support to lung cells before symptoms develop. Regular inhaler use empowers patients to stay ahead of pollution-triggered issues.

When going outside is unavoidable, selecting the right mask is crucial. Simple cloth masks are inadequate, as they fail to block fine particles. Dr. Gopal strongly advocates for the use of N95 or FFP2 masks, which offer a secure fit and effectively filter harmful particulate matter associated with asthma attacks. A well-fitted mask can minimize exposure and help prevent sudden respiratory difficulties.

As pollution spikes, recognizing when to seek medical help is imperative. Dr. Gopal emphasizes that asthma patients should consult a physician if they rely on relief inhalers more than twice weekly, awaken at night due to breathing issues, or find daily activities like climbing stairs challenging. Certain circumstances necessitate immediate medical care, such as when a rescue inhaler proves ineffective, when a person can barely speak, or when lips exhibit bluish or grayish tones due to low oxygen levels. In these instances, prompt medical intervention is critical.

As pollution levels are projected to rise with each passing winter, experts assert that asthma patients must remain vigilant and adopt small yet significant daily measures for protection. Keeping track of AQI, staying indoors when feasible, ensuring clean indoor air, adhering to medication routines, and wearing appropriate masks can substantially reduce asthma attack frequency. While the environment may be beyond personal control, taking proactive steps towards safety can enable individuals to breathe easier and maintain their well-being throughout polluted seasons.
