Eddie Murphy to Be Recognized with AFI Life Achievement Award in Los Angeles

Eddie Murphy, an eminent comedian and actor with a career that spans nearly 50 years, will be celebrated with the Life Achievement Award from the American Film Institute. The AFI board confirmed that the prestigious accolade will be awarded during a star-studded event at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on April 18.

“Eddie Murphy is an absolute American icon,” expressed Kathleen Kennedy, chair of AFI’s board. “His impact on film, television, and stand-up comedy is unforgettable, showcasing a limitless talent.”

At age 64, Murphy first gained recognition as a teenage stand-up performer and later became well-known through his role on Saturday NightLive. His box office hits include Beverly Hills Cop, Coming to America, The Nutty Professor, and the Shrek series. Notably, he received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor for Dreamgirls in 2007, contributing to his impressive collection of accolades, including a Golden Globe and a Screen Actors Guild Award.

In the Netflix documentary Being Eddie, he shared reflections on fame and recognition, stating, “Winning is great, but if I don’t win, I don’t lose sleep over it. I’m still Eddie in the morning.”

Murphy was also honored with the Cecil B. DeMille Award at the 2023 Golden Globes, where he delivered a brief yet poignant acceptance speech. He remarked, “When you’re young, you take everything for granted. Now I value each opportunity and moment.”

AFI’s Life Achievement Award ceremonies are famous for attracting stars. Last year’s event honoring Francis Ford Coppola featured celebrities like Steven Spielberg, Robert De Niro, and Harrison Ford. Murphy will join the ranks as the 51st recipient of this significant award, which first went to John Ford in 1973. Recent winners include Denzel Washington, Nicole Kidman, and Julie Andrews.
