On Thursday, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) lodged serious accusations against Mamata Banerjee, the Chief Minister of West Bengal, asserting that she obstructed a money laundering investigation tied to an alleged coal smuggling scheme in the state. The federal body reported that Banerjee entered a political consultant’s home amid the ongoing raids and is alleged to have removed important evidence, including key documents and electronic devices.
In an official statement, the ED explained that these actions occurred during search operations across multiple locations in West Bengal and Delhi. This investigation traces back to a 2020 case initiated by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) concerning an alleged coal smuggling syndicate, purportedly led by Anup Majhi, known as “Lala,” accused of unlawfully mining coal from Eastern Coalfields’ leasehold areas in Paschim Bardhaman district.
During the raid at the Kolkata residence of Pratik Jain, a co-founder of a political consultancy firm closely connected to the ruling party’s IT wing, the ED claimed Banerjee arrived with a significant police presence. It was alleged that she removed pertinent evidence from the site while the search was still ongoing.
The agency further stated that Banerjee subsequently visited the consultancy office situated in Salt Lake, accompanied by aides and police officials, where they reportedly removed additional physical documents and electronic devices. The ED classified these actions as a severe obstruction to its investigation, carried out under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).
As per the ED's account, the searches proceeded in a "calm and professional manner" prior to the chief minister's intervention. The agency has also indicated that a hawala operator linked to the coal smuggling ring orchestrated transactions worth crores for the consultancy firm, raising eyebrows regarding financial connections under investigation.
In response to potential political critiques, the ED emphasized its inquiry is strictly evidence-driven, not targeting any political party or electoral process. It noted that no party office has been searched and that this operation represents a standard enforcement, strictly adhering to legal protocols.
These revelations have intensified the existing political and legal tensions in West Bengal, with the allegations likely to ignite passionate reactions and discussions in the upcoming days.
