On Wednesday, a formidable earthquake registering 6.3 on the Richter scale shook Sumatra Island, compounding Indonesia's current challenges with catastrophic floods and landslides. This seismic event took place near Aceh province at a depth of 10 kilometers, fortunately without triggering a tsunami alert. So far, no injuries or significant damage have been reported from the quake.
Situated within the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” Indonesia is particularly susceptible to earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. This recent quake arrives during a period of intense flooding exacerbated by Cyclone Senyar, which impacted the region earlier this week.
Flash floods predominantly affecting North Sumatra province have already resulted in at least 28 fatalities, with many others still unaccounted for. Rescue teams are striving to reach cut-off communities, although they face obstacles due to damaged roads and persistent rainfall.
Continuous rain over the last two days led to river overflows in North Sumatra, inundating areas with mud, rocks, and debris. Many homes were submerged, prompting families to seek refuge on higher ground. In Central Tapanuli, landslides have wreaked havoc on multiple residences, whereas flooding in surrounding areas has impacted around 2,000 homes. In South Tapanuli, falling trees have tragically claimed the lives of eight individuals. Authorities have moved over 2,800 locals to temporary shelters for their safety.
From October to March, Indonesia typically sees heavy rainfall, which often leads to floods and landslides, putting millions who live along floodplains or on steep hillsides at risk.
Local authorities and the government are actively conducting rescue and relief efforts, while they advise residents to remain vigilant in light of potential weather alerts and aftershocks.
