Dwayne Johnson has disclosed that he made an attempt to land a cameo in the eagerly awaited sequel, The Devil Wears Prada 2, aiming to share the screen with Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, and Emily Blunt. Currently receiving accolades for his performance in The Smashing Machine, Johnson revealed his attempt while discussing his growing affinity for unconventional roles.
Johnson's connection to the film stemmed from his co-star Emily Blunt, who appeared in The Smashing Machine, a narrative focused on the turbulent journey of MMA fighter Mark Kerr. While Blunt was engaged with The Devil Wears Prada 2, Johnson boldly expressed his desire to be part of this iconic franchise known for its fashion influence and editorial drama, a stark contrast to his action-centric career.
He enthusiastically pitched himself for a minor yet impactful character, someone exuding confidence, style, and a strong presence within the fashion arena. Blunt confirmed his attempts, chuckling as she noted that “he tried” to secure a role. Johnson humorously described the requirement of managing “size 15 heels” for his character, to which Blunt playfully remarked that he actually looked great in them, even referring to him as “hot” while donning heels.
Despite his charm and determination, Johnson did not ultimately land a part in the sequel. Nonetheless, his enthusiasm kept him closely linked to the production. During the filming in New York City, Blunt regularly sent him updates and sneak peeks from her car before heading on set. Johnson reminiscenced about these moments, noting the intense atmosphere filled with fans, describing the excitement as “pop star level,” reflecting the lasting power of the franchise nearly twenty years after the original's debut.
Directed by David Frankel, who also oversaw the 2006 classic, The Devil Wears Prada 2 seeks to continue the narrative of its characters within a contemporary framework, highlighting the evolution of the fashion industry in an era dominated by social media, digital impact, and changing workplace dynamics. Anticipation is rising as the film is slated for release on May 1, 2026, with the original cast returning, marking it as one of the year’s most awaited films.
