The Tamil drama Kaantha, featuring Dulquer Salmaan, Bhagyashri Borse, and Rana Daggubati, debuted this month and is garnering acclaim from critics. With a box office total of ₹19.95 crore, the film is thriving. Set in 1950s Madras, it portrays the journey of T. K. Mahadevan (Dulquer Salmaan) as he embarks on making Tamil cinema's first horror film, Saantha.
In a recent conversation with Sudhir Srinivasan, director Selvamani Selvaraj and actress Bhagyashri Borse revealed insights into some of the film's most dramatic moments. Bhagyashri mentioned her initial reluctance to film a scene where her character delivers a slap to Dulquer for the first time. She conveyed:
"I definitely felt hesitant about it behind the scenes, but Dulquer aimed for that level of authenticity. We really committed to it, and he was prepared to endure it for the performance. I respect that, but I was genuinely nervous. It was the first time I’ve ever done anything like that."
The director noted that Dulquer’s face turned red post-scene, underscoring the actor’s commitment and professionalism.
The narrative centers on the rivalry between T. K. Mahadevan and his previous mentor, Ayya (Samuthirakani), shaping the lives of those around them. Bhagyashri portrays Kumari, an aspiring actress, while Rana Daggubati takes on the role of Inspector Phoenix, deepening the plot.
Directed by Selvamani, Kaantha is produced by Dulquer Salmaan and Rana Daggubati through Wayfarer Films and Spirit Media. The film is celebrated for its cinematography, authentic period details, and genuine depiction of 1950s Madras, creating a nostalgic experience for viewers.
In summary, Kaantha’s appeal lies not just in its performances and direction, but also in its exploration of Tamil Nadu's early horror cinema, showcasing the cast's dedication. The dynamic between Dulquer Salmaan and Bhagyashri Borse, alongside Rana Daggubati’s significant role, results in a captivating viewing experience.
