In response to increasing concerns about young individuals recklessly riding electric bikes on pedestrian and cycling pathways, Dubai Police have ramped up enforcement efforts. This comes after reports indicated e-bikes reaching speeds over 100 km/h.
A recent week of focused operations across areas such as Nad Al Sheba saw the confiscation of 101 electric bikes and the issuance of 130 fines, with most offenders being teenagers. Major General Saif Muhair Al Mazrouei, Assistant Commandant for Operations Affairs at Dubai Police, pointed out that several e-bikes had been illegally modified to enhance their speed, posing significant risks to pedestrians, other road users, and the riders themselves.
“E-bikes are meant for recreational purposes and should not be used on sports tracks,” he noted, stressing the dangers associated with irresponsible riding.
Legal actions have been initiated against the offenders, and parents of underage riders have been called in to discuss the perils of allowing children to ride without supervision. Dubai Police have encouraged families to educate their children on the importance of safety gear, compliance with traffic regulations, and riding only on approved paths.
The UAE traffic laws stipulate that electric bikes and scooters are allowed a maximum speed of 20 km/h and can only be used on designated routes with proper permits from the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA). Violators can face fines of AED 300 for riding on roads with speed limits exceeding 60 km/h, AED 200 for riding without a valid RTA permit, and AED 200 for improper parking or obstructing traffic.
This operation is part of Dubai Police’s ongoing commitment to ensure public safety and prevent accidents linked to reckless e-bike riding. Authorities continue to remind the public of the importance of safe riding and following traffic rules to safeguard both riders and pedestrians.
