Dubai Police Raise Alarm Over Holiday Rental Scam as AED 8,000 Lost

Post by : Raina Nasser

In a timely warning, Dubai Police are sounding the alarm over a surge in holiday rental scams after a man lost AED 8,000 during an online booking attempt for a chalet. The rise in fraud cases is particularly concerning as the holiday season approaches in Dubai.

The victim discovered an enticing online ad for a holiday chalet, which led him to transfer AED 8,000 as a deposit and insurance fee. Unfortunately, once the payment was completed, the scammer became unreachable, leading the man to report the incident to the authorities.

Officers of the Dubai Police emphasize that scammers often target individuals seeking holiday bargains online. They frequently use forged images, irresistible pricing, and urgent tactics that pressure victims into making quick payments without a proper check of the listings. Victims often realize too late that they have been duped.

The authorities underlined that scammers prey on the heightened demand for short-term rentals during the festive season. They caution that offers appearing “too good to be true” are usually deceptive. Members of the public are advised to exercise care when engaging with unfamiliar advertisers on social media and various online platforms.

Dubai Police recommend that residents verify property information, confirm the owner's identity, and arrange site visits prior to any financial transaction. They also emphasized the necessity of using recognized rental platforms and formal contracts to mitigate fraud risks.

To combat such fraud, authorities continue their public awareness initiatives, particularly under the “Be Aware of Fraud” campaign. Residents are encouraged to report any suspicious activities through official channels, such as the e-Crime platform or by dialing 901. This warning aims to safeguard residents and diminish instances of online fraud throughout the city.
