Controversial DRS Call in Ashes Test: Carey's Key Wicket Stays

Controversial DRS Call in Ashes Test: Carey's Key Wicket Stays

Post by : Mina Rahman

Day one of the third Ashes Test at Adelaide Oval was marked by a significant DRS controversy, as a technology mishap permitted Australia’s Alex Carey to evade a critical caught-behind appeal.

While batting at 72, Carey edged a ball from England’s Josh Tongue, which was expected to be caught by Jamie Smith. The on-field umpire dismissed the appeal, and even after employing the Decision Review System (DRS), the initial call remained unchanged.

Snicko technology, intended to identify slight edges, indicated a sound but misaligned it with the ball’s trajectory past the bat. Consequently, Carey continued his innings, ultimately scoring 106 before being dismissed later on.

Todd Greenberg, chief of Cricket Australia, termed the incident “unacceptable,” highlighting lapses both in umpiring and technology. He confirmed that the governing body is demanding clarity from the tech provider to prevent future occurrences.

The makers of Snicko acknowledged the mistake, clarifying that an incorrect microphone was chosen for audio processing, leading to the inaccurate reading. England lost a review during this confusion, but match officials upheld the decision.

Earlier, Australia scored 371 runs after winning the toss and opted to bat. They now hold a 2-0 lead in the Ashes series following wins in Perth and Brisbane.
