DP World has entered a significant agreement with the Government of Afghanistan to revamp and oversee the nation’s primary land border sites at Torkham and Hairatan. This initiative aims to modernise Afghanistan’s crucial trade routes and solidify its position as a principal transit path linking Central and South Asia. The Torkham and Hairatan borders are essential for trade with neighboring nations, facilitating billions of dollars in commerce every year, including projections of over USD 1.6 billion with Pakistan in 2024. However, outdated infrastructure and outdated manual systems have hampered trade, making renovations vital for more efficient and secure border operations.
This agreement, structured as a Public–Private Partnership (PPP), will mandate DP World to conduct a comprehensive technical and financial review before solidifying the concession. The intended enhancements consist of modern infrastructure, state-of-the-art cargo management systems, and digital border processes designed to expedite, secure, and optimize trade. The accord was formalised by Alhaj Mufti Abdul Mateen Saeed, Deputy Minister of Revenue and Customs of Afghanistan, and Nasser Al Neyadi, Executive Vice-President of DP World.
Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, the Chairman and Group CEO of DP World, remarked that enhancing trade corridors is pivotal for economic advancement. He noted that upgrading Afghanistan’s borders will unleash greater commercial potential and promote regional development, offering avenues for stability and economic progress.
Moreover, the project will focus on generating local employment, enhancing skills, and fostering close collaboration with national stakeholders. The Afghan government will maintain oversight of customs, immigration, security, and regulatory frameworks while partnering with DP World to ensure smooth and secure operations at these essential trade hubs.
This partnership underscores Afghanistan’s dedication to refining its trade infrastructure, positioning DP World as a key ally in elevating regional connectivity and economic progress.
