Can Drinking Warm Water for Three Days Help Relieve Constipation? A Doctor Explains

Post by : Saif Nasser

Constipation is a common health issue that affects many people, often due to poor diet, stress, lack of movement, or low water intake. In recent times, a popular claim on social media suggests that drinking only warm water for three days can clear constipation completely. A Maryland-based doctor has explained whether this method truly works and what science says about it.

Dr Kunal Sood, a physician based in the United States, says warm water is not a medicine or a laxative, but it can support the body’s natural digestive process. According to him, there is real body science behind why warm water may help people feel relief. One reason is that warm water can gently activate the gastrocolic reflex, which is the body’s natural signal that tells the intestines to move waste forward. This is the same reflex that makes some people feel the urge to use the toilet after eating.

Warm water also helps relax the muscles of the intestines. When these muscles are relaxed, stool can move more easily through the digestive system. This reduces discomfort and strain during bowel movements. Dr Sood also points out that people usually drink warm water slowly, which helps improve overall hydration. Proper hydration is one of the most important factors in preventing and easing constipation.

Studies have shown that water temperature can influence how the gut works. Warm or body-temperature water helps the digestive system function smoothly, while cold water can slow down stomach activity and make digestion harder. Because of this, warm water may help the intestines return to normal movement, especially in people who already struggle with irregular bowel habits.

However, Dr Sood clearly states that warm water alone is not a complete solution. Constipation cannot be cured by one habit alone. For lasting relief, people must also eat enough fibre, stay physically active, follow regular meal timings, and drink enough fluids throughout the day. Warm water can support these habits, but it should not replace them.

In simple terms, drinking warm water for a few days may help the body function better and improve bowel movement, especially in the morning. But it is not a magic fix. A healthy routine, balanced diet, and regular movement remain the most important steps for good digestion. Anyone facing long-term or severe constipation should always seek medical advice instead of relying only on home remedies.
